About the Special Education Center (SEC)

History

The Special Education Center (SEC) was established in 1980, with one director appointed. After the establishment of the Department of Special Education in 1987, the head of the center was concurrently held by the chairperson of the department. Starting in 2007, due to the expansion of services to cover preschool, elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels, as well as the center's management of the school's resource room, the position of the center director has been concurrently held by a full-time associate professor or higher-ranking faculty member of the Department of Special Education.

Organization

  1. The center is led by a director, appointed by the university president from among full-time associate professors or higher-ranking faculty members, and is responsible for overseeing all center operations..
  2. The center develops and implements strategies in line with the Ministry of Education’s special education policies and actively promotes training and policy advocacy. It handles initial assessments for students requiring special education in higher education institutions within the Tainan-Penghu advisory zone, supports services at regional colleges and universities, provides case counseling, assists in vocational transitions, and offers comprehensive consulting services to improve the quality and effectiveness of special education support.
  3. A special education consultation hotline is operated by the center to serve the southern region.
  4. The center employs two project assistants responsible for various administrative duties.
  5. A resource room, staffed by three resource counselors, provides dedicated support for students with special needs at the university.

Services

  1. Evaluation and counseling services for students with special needs, including assistance with admission.
  2. Legal consultation and support related to special education.
  3. Discussions and consultation on teaching-related issues in special education.
  4. Provision and exchange of teaching resources for special education.
  5. Consultation services for parents of children with special needs.
  6. Follow-up discussions and support for special or individual cases.
  7. Continuing education and professional development for special education professionals.
  8. Other special education-related services.

Target Groups

Special education teachers, administrative staff, educational support personnel, students with special needs, and their parents from universities, colleges, high schools, junior high schools, elementary schools, and preschools.

  1. An office that also houses the consultation hotline.
  2. A room displaying various testing and instructional materials.
  3. A resource room shared with the Department of Special Education library.
